Interestingly, the EcR mRNA has predicted binding sites for miR-14 (data not shown), and our global gene expression assays revealed a downregulation of this miRNA in bees silenced for EcR gene function.
[score:5]
These results suggest that in A. mellifera, EcR gene expression is regulated in a loop-type mechanism involving miR-14, as already demonstrated for D. melanogaster (Varghese and Cohen, 2007; for a comprehensive review see Yamanaka et al., 2013).

Moreover, ecdysteroid signaling was shown to be linked to the expression levels of the let-7-C cluster genes, as well as of miR-14 and miR-34 during insect development (for review see Kucherenko and Shcherbata, 2013).

Many of the miRNAs affected by EcR knockdown in honeybees (let-7, miR-1, miR-9a, miR-12, miR-14, miR-34, miR-79, miR-92b, miR-124, miR-184, miR-210, miR-219, miR-263a, miR-276, miR-279, miR-283, miR-305, miR-306, miR-316, miR-317) have previously been reported as putatively involved in the regulation of D. melanogaster immune genes, particularly those belonging to the JNK, Imd and Toll signaling pathways (Fullaondo and Lee, 2012).

In the network constructed with miRNAs, mRNAs and lncRNAs, we found that some genes served as bridges linking different miRNAs, four of which (gene id: 408284, 408609, 409587, and 409152) acting as miRNA targets linked let-7, miR-100, miR-12, miR-14, miR-316 and miR-996.
[score:3]
Additionally, miR-14 and miR-8 have been suggested to be associated with juvenile hormones (JH) and ecdysteroids (Ec), which play key roles in ovary development and other reproductive behaviors in honey bees (Boecking, Bienefeld & Drescher, 2000; Flatt, Tu & Tatar, 2005; Goodman & Cusson, 2012; Hartfelder & Emlen, 2005; Hoover et al., 2003; Riddiford, 1994; Wyatt & Davey, 1996).

In Drosophila, mir-14 deficiency is associated with a variety of phenotypes, including a lower probability of larvae to survive development to adulthood, reduced adult lifespan, stress-sensitivity and abnormal energy metabolism [24], [25].

One of these genes is mir-14, which has diminished levels in the IE data set (−0.52 log [2]-fold change) (Table 1).
