In contrast, the expression levels of miR160, miR166, miR167, miR171, miR396 and miR444 were down-regulated at the late phase after being up-regulated during early development (Additional file 8). [score:10]

In an earlier study, we have reported that miR444 and it's target genes (2 MADS box factors) are conserved in monocots such as wheat, barley, maize, sorghum and sugarcane but not in Arabidopsis [32]. [score:3]
Interestingly, miR444 target sequences were found in MADS-box transcription factor genes in grape and soybean. [score:3]
These observations raises two possibilities; (1) monocots may have retained miR444 which regulates MADS box factors while dicots have lost after the divergence, (2) miR444 may have evolved in monocots after the divergence. [score:2]
These observations suggest that the 2 MADS box factors may have been regulated by different members of miR444 family in monocots. [score:2]

The phenotype of transgenic lines overexpressing miR444 provided evidence that OsMADS23, OsMADS27 and OsMADS57 could have a role in regulating the lateral response to localised nitrate in rice [49], as ANR1 does in Arabidopsis [26]. [score:4]
However, it has been noted that miR444 has additional target genes (non-MADS box) in rice and there could be other unknown genes involved in the root developmental responses to the nutrient supply [50]. [score:4]

High-throughput sequencing technology has identified miRNAs from Dongxiang wild rice, and 33 differentially expressed miRNAs responded to drought stress, including miR164c, miR319b, miR444, miR166h-5p, miR172d-5p, miR167h-3p, miR160f-5p, etc. [score:3]
