Further analyses indicated that some miRNAs targeted a single gene (i. e., miR168 and miR2109), while the other miRNAs targeted multiple genes (i. e., miR156 and miR172). [score:5]
Four differentially expressed targets of miRNA156, belonging to the SPL family, were further verified through qRT-PCR. [score:5]
Temporal regulation of shoot development in Arabidopsis thaliana by miR156 and its target SPL3. [score:5]
Previous studies have reported that the overexpression of miR156 delayed the onset of flowering, while the overexpression of SPL3 and SPL9 accelerated flowering, indicating that both groups of SPL factors were important for flowering [53, 56– 58]. [score:5]
Four targets of miR156 at 0 h were increased under SDs, functioning as the positive regulators of the flowering time in soybean (Fig 5C). [score:4]
The reduction in SPL activities through increased miR156 expression delayed the onset of flowering in SD plants, such as soybean, similar to the LD plant Arabidopsis [57]. [score:3]
MiR156 regulates the expression of the SQUAMOSA PROMOTER BINDING-LIKE (SPL) family of transcription factors and affects the phase transition from vegetative growth to reproductive growth [20, 27]. [score:3]
The expression pattern of miR156, miR159 and miR172. [score:3]
It has been reported that miR156 targets SPL genes and plays an important role in a separate endogenous pathway [53]. [score:3]
Here, differentially abundant miRNA expression under different day-length treatments revealed that the induction of five members of the miR156 family (miR156a, miR156h, miR156k, miR156n and miR156o) was significantly increased under LDs. [score:3]
In the autonomous pathways, miR156 acts as a key negative regulator. [score:2]
Therefore, miR172 and miR156 might work together to regulate flowering time, although these molecules are involved in different pathways. [score:2]
At the shoot apex, the forward feed action of miR156/ SPL and FT/FD modules worked together for the regulation of flowering [53]. [score:2]
The largest conserved family was miR156 with 15 members (S5 Table). [score:1]
Studies have reported that miR156 decreases with the increasing miR172 during plant growth [23]. [score:1]
These results above indicated that the increase of miR156 abundance in LDs resulted in a decline in SPLs in soybean. [score:1]

Of the seven miR156 variants we identified in the primary root tips, four are abundantly expressed and were unaffected by the treatment, while two variants that are expressed at low levels (miR156b/f and miR156r) are highly upregulated under stress (Additional file 1). [score:8]
By regulating the expression of SBP transcription factors in leaves, miR156 is known to regulate plant progression into reproductive phase from vegetative phase [25– 27]. [score:5]
In different plant species, miR156 is largely upregulated under drought [5]. [score:4]
Even in their study, only 3 variants (MIR156h, d and c) of miR156 family were found to respond to heat suggesting that the overall miR156 regulation would only be marginal and yet sufficient to make Arabidopsis plants to adapt to the recurrent heat by affecting the SBP factors expression [28]. [score:4]
miR156 regulates several SBP transcription factors and miR166 targets HD-ZIP transcription factors whereas miR1507, miR1509 and miR1510 largely found in legumes so far. [score:4]
Besides in leaves, miR156 is abundantly expressed in primary root tips (this study) and the nodules [7] suggesting a much broader role for miR156 family in plants. [score:3]
Among the highly conserved 23 miRNA families [23], two (miR156 and miR166) were classified as high, three (miR168, miR396 and miR172) as moderate and seven (miR169, miR171, miR164, miR390, miR159, miR160 and miR167) as low and two (miR395 and miR399) as extremely low abundantly expressed miRNA families in primary root tips of soybean. [score:3]
Of the 171 miRNA families, five (miR156, miR166, miR1507, miR1509 and miR1510) were categorized as highly abundant. [score:1]
Most recently, Stief et al. [28] demonstrated that miR156 plays an important role in heat tolerance of Arabidopsis. [score:1]
This observation suggests a role for specific variants of miR156 under water stress, probably in specific cell types within the primary root tip. [score:1]

For instance, in M. truncatula, a 20 nt variant of miR156 was able to cleave a novel WD40 target in addition to the conserved Squamosa-Binding Protein TF targets (Naya et al., 2010). [score:5]
Cleavage of a non-conserved target by a specific miR156 isoform in root apexes of Medicago truncatula. [score:3]
Among PHAS loci which contained two 22 nt miRNA binding sites, those authors found an APETALA2 (AP2)-like gene, which possess one cleavage site for miR172 and a predicted non-cleavable miR156 target site, resembling the two miR390 complementary motives in TAS3. [score:3]
Thus, the acquisition of the second (miR156) miRNA binding site in MtAP2 certainly happened recently in evolution (Zhai et al., 2011) and this may have consequences on the generation of secondary siRNAs. [score:1]

At the same time, abundance of miR172 gradually increases when plants enter the flowering (reproductive) phase, acting downstream of the miR156 targets, SPLs (Squamosa Promoter-Binding Protein-Likes). [score:3]
In our data set, miR156 was highly expressed in the cotyledons as well as roots of both C08 and W05, then the abundance declined in the leaves of young seedlings by almost 10 times (Table S4g). [score:3]
Additionally, miR482-triggered TAS5 was found in tomatoes and dual miR156 and/or miR529 -mediated TAS6 was found in Physcomitrella patens. [score:1]
Previous studies showed that miR156 is necessary for maintaining juvenility in plants. [score:1]
However, in C08 seedling leaves, miR156 kept on declining while, in W05 seedling leaves, the abundance retained. [score:1]
The decline of miR156 abundance and the elevation of miR172 abundance in the leaves of young seedlings could be a signal that suggests the initiation of phase transition. [score:1]
Two key miRNAs, miR156, and miR172, modulate juvenility and flowering. [score:1]
The accumulation level of miR156 went down when the plant transitioned into adulthood and later to flowering. [score:1]

These findings suggest that the tandem arrangement of two miR156 homologs is not restricted to cereals and seems to exist in diverse plant species that are distantly related. [score:1]
Five miRNA families – miR319, miR156/157, miR169, miR165/166 and miR394 – were found in 51, 45, 41, 40 and 40 diverse plant species, respectively. [score:1]
At least five families (miR319, miR156/157, miR169, miR165/166 and miR394) were found in more than 40 plant species (Table 1). [score:1]
Thus, we show miRNA gene clustering for miR156 and miR169 loci in diverse plant species. [score:1]
Recently, two tandem miR156 homologs were reported in rice and maize [48, 49]. [score:1]
In comparing the syntenic regions among 3 cereals (i. e., rice, sorghum and maize), Wang et al. [49] suggested that two miR156 homologs in tandem arrangement are highly conserved among cereals. [score:1]
Here, we identified an miR156 cluster in several other plant species: two tandem miR156 homologs located within 370 nt of the same orientation in the rice EST AK110797, two miR156 homologs separated by ~190 nt in the sugarcane EST CA294779, two miR156 homologs separated by 340 nt in the EST CL172990 of Sorghum bicolor, and two miR156 homologs separated by 301 nt in the maize EST CL985276. [score:1]
Interestingly, we found a similar arrangement of two tandem miR156 homologs separated by 590 nt in the EST CJ743424 of Ipomea nil, a dicotyledonous plant. [score:1]
The results suggest that at least four miRNA families (miR156, miR169, miR395 and miR1219) exist as miRNA clusters in plants. [score:1]
Our analysis indicated that along with the well-documented clustered organization of miR395, miR156 and miR169 also exist as clusters in several plant species. [score:1]
Interestingly, miR319, miR156/157, miR169, miR165/166 and miR394 homologs were found in 51, 45, 41, 40 and 40 diverse plant species, respectively (Table 1 and see Additional file 1). [score:1]
Additionally two very closely spaced miR156 homologs were found in a genomic clone of Oryza granulata (216 nt), Oryza punctata (370 nt). [score:1]
