Several miRNAs were expressed to similar levels in all tissues tested, e. g. miR396 was highly expressed in all tissues and miR162 showed moderate to low levels of expression in all tissues; miR164 and miR393 were barely detectable in the shoot apex, whereas miR160, miR169 and miR390 were more abundant in the shoot apex than other tissues; miR398, miR403 and miR408 appeared up-regulated in leaf. Some exceptions suggest differences in phloem-mobility of specific miRNAs among species or possibly between herbaceous and woody plants; in particular, miR168 and miR408 accumulated in the phloem sap of pumpkin and Brassica napus, but could not be amplified from the apple phloem sap. [score:1]

For example, the expression of gma-miR167 is induced by far-red light (Jones-Rhoades and Bartel, 2004; Zhang et al., 2014a), the expression levels of ath-miR408 is induced by light (Li et al., 2014; Zhang et al., 2014a), and the expression levels of ath-miR396 (Zhou et al., 2007), ptc-miR168a-b, ptc-miR169, and ptc-miR398 (Jia et al., 2009) are induced by UV-light. In DE-miRNAs analysis, only miR398, miR408, miR159, and miR156 expressed stronger in vegetative bud. [score:3]

miR408 functions in copper homeostasis regulation together with miR398 in Arabidopsis and Populus (Lu et al., 2005; Ab del-Ghany and Pilon, 2008), and it also involves in the HY5-SPL7 network that mediates the coordinated response to light and copper (Yamasaki et al., 2009; Zhang et al., 2014).
