Eight genes were targeted by at least two miRNAs; for example, MYB33 and MYB81 were targeted by miR159 and miR319, and SPL2 and SPL13b were targeted by miR156 and miR535. [score:7]
Many of these targets encode transcription factors; for example, they include the SPL (target of miR156 and miR535), MYB (miR159, miR319 and new-18), HAM3 (miR171), NAC (miR164), ARF (miR160, miR167 and miR169), TCP (miR319), GRF (miR396 and miR477) and SIGMA (new-11) genes. [score:5]
For example, miR319 regulates transcription factors of the TCP family, which regulate multiple biological pathways, including hormone biosynthesis and signalling for cell proliferation and differentiation [4]; a set of miRNAs that affect plant hormone homeostasis and starch accumulation during grain filling in rice has also been identified [6]. [score:3]
Several miRNAs are involved in starch accumulation in rice [6], and five of them (miR159, miR160, miR164, miR167 and miR319) also had the same targets in cassava. [score:3]
Both miR159 and miR319 shared sequence identity at 20 of 22 nucleotides, and the expression level of miR159 was far greater than that of miR319 in two cultivars and the wild progenitor. [score:3]
A previous study reported that miR159 regulated MYB mRNAs, and miR319 predominantly acted on TCP mRNAs in Arabidopsis [27]. [score:2]

Our data showed that MeTCP3a and MeTCP4, targets of miRNA319, had altered expression patterns under cold, drought and salt stress, suggesting that these genes might play important roles under abiotic stress conditions in cassava. [score:5]
Previous reports have shown that knockdown of miR319 -dependent TCPs (by constitutive miR319 overexpression) increases drought and salinity stress tolerance in bentgrass [20]. [score:4]
AtTCP2, AtTCP3, AtTCP4, AtTCP10 and AtTCP24 have been earlier identified as targets of miRNA319, and are required for leaf development, petal growth, cell wall synthesis and JA synthesis 14, 26, 27. [score:4]
Remarkably, 5 of the group H members (AtTCP2, AtTCP3, AtTCP4, AtTCP10, and AtTCP24) are post-transcriptionally targeted by miRNA319 in Arabidopsis. [score:3]
The closest homologs of these Arabidopsis genes in cassava are these five genes: MeTCP2a, MeTCP2b, MeTCP3a, MeTCP3b and MeTCP4, all containing putative target site of miR319 47, 48. [score:3]

Twenty-one miRNA families (miR156, miR159, miR160, miR162, miR164, miR166-169, miR171, miR172, miR319, miR390, miR393-399, and miR408) seem to be universally expressed among diverse plant species (Fig 8). [score:3]
The four families, miR319, miR396, miR482, and miR535 were found to contain 29, 26, 21, and 20 families, respectively. [score:1]
Transcription factors are important components in the transcription process and play an important role in a variety of biological functions, and therefore it was no surprise to observe 4 miRNA families (miR166, miR169, miR319 and miR408) in cassava were associated with 9 transcription factors.
